Growing up, whenever I thought of uncle Trevor I always thought I was related to the Del-Boy that made it! He always had a taste for the finer things and as a boy I was always very impressed by the house, cars and gadgets. I always loved going to visit/stay at his house near Sturminster Newton as it always felt a luxury treat: outdoor pool, sauna, table tennis and at Christmas a wonderful selection of sweets in bowls that you helped yourself to on the way past! I hoped to emulate him when I was older and 2 out of 4 isn’t bad… I’m still working on the plans for the pool and sauna…
When the house hosted its 400th birthday I was privileged to be allowed by Trev to run the ‘bar’ and pour pints. Trev might think that I was helping him out, but I was in my element and having a wonderful time! In truth it was the fun and laughter that Trev brought to an occasion that was the highlight of his gatherings – he was always such good company; he took time to listen to a young/teenage boy in a genuine way and showed a genuine interest in what I was up to. I’ll always remember the way that he was with me after Pop died. Away from home, I’d had to buy a new suit and shirt for the funeral but wasn’t sure about a tie. Trev took me to his bedroom opened his closet and gave me a selection of his ties (silk, of course) and then the hanger that they were on! I still use that tie hanger and think of Trev every workday morning as I reach for a tie.
One of my favourite memories of Trev came later in life when Trev (and Michael) took Dad and me to France to stock up on wine for my and Joanne’s wedding. As lovely as the drive further into France was and the breakfast in the quaint cafe, it was the guiding hand in the hypermarket to select the best / most appropriate wines before heading back to the car park to uncork them sat on the tailgate and give them a try that was the highlight for me! The looks we got from the locals doing their weekly shop!!! The bit that always makes me chuckle was going back in to buy food as “these wines might taste better/different with food” and then trying them all again!!! It worked though!
Trev, thanks for the example you set, the positive influence you’ve had on me, the fun you’ve brought and your generosity, not just financial, but time and care at key points where I needed it when I was younger. I really appreciated it.
Wishing you a very happy birthday.
Jim, Joanne, Rebecca & Jacob
